Appetite for Good

On Friday October 1, Project By Project, a volunteer-run Asian Pacific American non-profit organization, is holding its 12th Annual Plate By Plate Tasting Event to benefit the Hamilton-Madison House. HMH is a Manhattan-based non-profit settlement house that provides a range of health and social programs to aid New York City’s Asian immigrant population. The event will showcase more than 25 of New York City’s premiere restaurants.

Last year at this time, I was a tad skeptical of food trucks. Just how good could food be that’s prepared in a tiny space on a moving vehicle? For about a year now, these mini-restaurants on wheels have lined the sidewalks outside most office buildings in LA during lunch and being a curious foodie, I finally decided to get in line.

I was very fortunate to meet Michael Anthony, Executive Chef of Gramercy Tavern, at Taste of the Nation NY back in May. Months before the event, I saw an episode of Beyond the Dish where Chef Anthony went to the Green Market to pick out produce and taught the audience about the importance of fresh local food. I felt inspired and educated, and was interested in learning more from him.

So first off these two weeks have been pretty funny in retrospect. I decided to cook and when I cook, I always cook a lot of food. The first Sunday (8/22/2010) I went AMBITIOUS. After a long day of work on Sunday, I chose to make 2 gigantic pots of food. My rationale was that this was quick easy and painless. Boy was I wrong….

Riding on Patrick’s marathon fever, I spontaneously decided to run a 5K for charity. 26 miles I cannot do but 3.1 miles I definitely can! For a few weeks leading up to the September 12th Race for the Cure, I stalked the Midtown NYSC. I slowly ramped up to 3 miles on the treadmill, and even added some hills for a more realistic simulation of Central Park on race day. But what the actual 5K was nothing I like expected!

Careers through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP), a program that promotes and provides career opportunities in the food service industry for underserved youth through culinary arts education and employment, is planning to start a new initiative this fall regarding urban gardening.

Meet Mary Harris. She’s the founder of Heaven & Earth, LLC, a boutique on-line soap shop specializing in hand-made, all-natural products. The philosophy is simple, natural, healthy, and happy living, a philosophy Mary has sought to embody ever since her first exposure to one of nature’s most magnificent sights: the islands of Hawaii.

When I open my fridge and see: grape tomatoes, green beans, and a small piece of trout, I think, “Grilled trout with a side of mashed potatoes and boiled green beans.” I’m not sure what Chris Pandel thinks, but what he makes is the best salad I have ever tasted.
