Appetite for Good is made possible by the following contributors.

Patrick Chang, Co-Founder

Patrick Chang, co-founder of Appetite for Good, is, by day, a New York City based finance professional. His devotion to his community dates back to his middle school years where he volunteered at the public library to his high school years where he taught under privileged kids how to play tennis. During his college years, he was an active participant in Project Sunshine, participating in various events and activities such as arts and crafts for hospitalized children. Currently in NYC, he is an active volunteer with StreetWise Partners, an organization that helps motivated low-income individuals on the road to career success through mentoring relationships with business professionals; he was also instrumental to the success of the Taste of Success event. His passion for greater social impact is almost as impressive as his love for food.
- What is your favorite food and why? As a born and bred Texan, there is nothing more that warms my soul like a good chicken fried steak, which is neither steak nor chicken. It has been my one true love. It’s difficult to put into words how much I enjoy it, because even the word “love” is an understatement. The thought of the crispy golden brown breading wrapped around a tenderized steak, all smothered in white thick cream gravy speckled with flecks of pepper makes my mouth water and stomach rumble. A chicken fried steak is not complete without its trusty side kick a Texas-sized serving of fluffy buttery mashed potatoes, which is also drowned in gravy! Everything is better when it’s smothered in gravy! Mmm, can you just taste the goodness?
- What is an interesting hobby of yours? I love to stay active. I completed the NYC marathon (on a broken foot and under 4 hours) and lived to tell about it. I ran the marathon as part of the StreetWise Partners team. Currently looking for the next challenge! Possibly Tough Mudder? I also dream of becoming a competitive eater.
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? This is a tough question. There are so many great and commendable organizations out there, but innovation and job creation are two worthy causes close to my heart. I would love to one day start a non-profit business incubator accelerating successful development of entrepreneurial companies. The other would be to grow StreetWise Partners to the next level, and offer the tangible programs across the nation and world. Everyone deserves an opportunity for a good and stable job to help maintain, stimulate, and reinvigorate the economy.
New York
Francesca Bartolomey, New York City Correspondent

Francesca hails from the great state of New Jersey (and she’ll thank you for not snickering) where from an early age she was introduced to the wonders of the shore, Bon Jovi, Aquanet, Wawa, and hair scrunchies. She spent four years at Wellesley College, an all-women’s school just outside Boston where she occasionally studied some history here and there, but mostly engaged in time-wasting shenanigans with her friends. After graduation she worked for an independent market research and consulting firm and lived in the North End (famed for its incredible Italian food) and Fenway (famed for its terrible baseball team) areas of Boston. Living in Boston suited her for awhile, but home beckoned and she moved to New York City after she accepted a job with a boutique M&A investment bank. After about a year and a half, she traded in suits and sushi dinners for the unglamorous life of a law student at Columbia Law School. In what meager spare time she has, she enjoys writing, sidewalk cafes, and classic rock cover bands.
- What is your favorite food and why? My mom makes this incredible chicken/pasta salad in the summer. I look forward to it every year. I won’t include the recipe here because I’m selfish. But it’s phenomenal. She only makes it in the summer which might be part of its intrigue, but whenever it makes an appearance, it’s every family member for him or herself: daughter pitted against father for the largest share! It’s my ultimate comfort food.
- What is an interesting hobby of yours? I collect magnets. My current favorite is a pair of New York taxicabs that my mom bought me from the New York Public Library.
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? I would split it between Children International and the ASPCA of New York City.
Carmel Mushin, New York Correspondent

Carmel is a recent Emory Law graduate with the soul of a 55 year old man and the heart of a Texan. She grew up in Houston, TX and by the time college rolled around she knew she needed a major change of scene, but wasn’t completely ready to ditch her Texan secessionist sensibility. So she headed north to Montreal, Quebec, where she studied art history and international development at McGill University. While in Montreal, Carmel was exposed to extreme cultural energy and extreme weather – and both left a huge impression on her. Carmel loves traveling and trying any and all food that natives of the country eat and she is also an aspiring human rights advocate. She has devoted time to causes like helping refugees from Darfur, Sudan obtain legal protection in countries they fled to, assisting members of the New Orleans community with landlord/tenant issues post-Katrina, and informing Haitians who were in the U.S. when the hurricane hit, of their legal right to stay here. In the in-between time, Carmel tries to keep up with her favorite fashion, food, and art blogs, and she also spends a little too much time shopping online. To keep sane, she does yoga – preferably hot, but she’s flexible (pun intended).
- What is your favorite food and why? It’s too hard to name a favorite and there’s so much food I haven’t even tried! So I’ll just name two of my favorite indulgences: tres leches and a fresh uni, a.k.a. sea urchin (NOT together!). I never really realized it until now, but I actually like both for similar reasons – texture, richness, and overall sensory overload! I’ve tried every tres leches I ever came across (or sought out) because I just love the sweet, milky, and moist goodness. As for uni, I think people either love it or hate it. For me, it was definitely love at first taste. I am still amazed by how rich, creamy, and sweet coexist so harmoniously with fishy and meaty (think foie gras of sashimi). It’s just delightful. (and I’m salivating!)
- What is an interesting hobby of yours? This may not be a hobby (I think law school prohibits those), but I LOOOVE the radio and listen to it all the time. Especially NPR. Ask me what’s going on in pop culture! no clue! But if it has to do with the news, Car Talk, Wait, wait, don’t tell me, or Prairie Home Companion, I’m your girl!
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? I would donate it to an organization like The Foundation for Sustainable Development, committing half of it to expanding primary and secondary education in lesser developed countries and the other half to empowering women. I think these are both vital to sustainable economic development, and at the same time, they promote human rights and empower individuals.
Josephine Son, New York City Correspondent

Josephine is a die-hard New Yorker and self-proclaimed rabid foodie. She is always on the lookout for the newest restaurants and food events in the city. When she’s not hunting down the latest new eats, Josephine is a Director of Entertainment Marketing at OgilvyEntertainment where she is responsible for developing branded marketing platforms.
Josephine has been a volunteer and supporter of City Harvest and New York Cares for many years and is thrilled to be joining the Appetite For Good team.
- What is your favorite food and why? That is possibly one of the most difficult questions for me because I really love all food. But I would say that anything my mother cooks for me is a favorite. She’s one of the most amazing cooks I’ve ever known and I know I got most of my love of food from her.
- What is an interesting hobby of yours? I love art and one of my favorite things to do is wander around the art galleries throughout NYC on my own looking at what inspires me.
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? ? I would donate it to City Harvest and New York Cares, both are great local NYC charities doing amazing work.
Karen Ko, New York City Correspondent

Karen is one of the few Hawaiians who decided to become a New Yorker. Most people can’t believe she left Hawaii for the big apple but you have to admit, where else in the world will you be able to find just about any cuisine you could possible crave!
Karen was also a volunteer and supporter of Streetwise Partners for many years, which is where she met Patrick and Sherry. Karen runs her own design company, Intersect Designs, and just recently launched her first jewelry brand, k2o by Karen Ko. Since Karen is her own boss, she frequently gets calls from Patrick to cover events (especially the ones during normal work hours) and as a result has become one of Appetite for Good’s contributing food photographer and writer.
- What is your favorite food and why? This really is a tough question for me since my favorite food changes just about every month. However, I will admit that I will always love Vietnamese shrimp summer rolls because it’s something I grew up eating. My list of favorite foods though tends to rotate between Kalbi, lobster rolls, kumamoto oysters, miso marinated black cod… and the list goes on.
- What is an interesting hobby of yours? Asides from cooking my favorite foods, an interesting hobby of mine is sky diving. I definitely love the adrenaline rush and one of these days I’m going to get my sky diving license!
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? I would donate it to Charity Water to build more water wells in remote villages.
Kristen Oliveri, New York City Correspondent

Kristen Oliveri is a New York-based financial journalist and food writer. When she’s not breaking news on the wealth management space, she’s blogging and writing restaurant reviews on her Web site, Pasta’s Kitchen. She blogs for a number of other Web sites, including Hungry? City and has contributed to its Thirsty? New York guide book. This Northeastern University grad also writes recipes, which many can be found on Life123. After learning about her gluten and dairy intolerance, Kristen is devoted to finding healthy ways to cook and share them with her community and friends.
- What is your favorite food and why? My favorite food is always changing, as there are too many delicious things all over this world to eat. Currently, I would say homemade pork barbeque ribs. I love the “low and slow” food process and I find that when you cook ribs at home you can make them healthier, without ever having to sacrifice any flavor.
- What is an interesting hobby of yours? When I’m not writing, I enjoy taking Latin and Ballroom dance classes. I’m also the founding member of a book club, where my friends and I get together monthly to discuss our current book pick, but more importantly, share a meal together.
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? I’d have to say I would donate it to my hometown charity Project Hospitality on Staten Island, New York. When I was a kid growing up, I’d help out in various clothing drives, food drives and help raise awareness for the cause. I have many family members who sit on the Board and continue to give back to this great cause and I would be honored to help further their cause.
Krishna Purohit, New York City Correspondent

Krishna is a full-time copywriter and freelance journalist. A writer for EGO Magazine, she covers South Asian art and culture across the New York area. A former art history and journalism major, she can usually be found meandering through the Metropolitan Museum of Art wondering what Augustus or Louis XIV ate for breakfast. When not contemplating imperial menus, she is on the hunt for the perfect cup of chai and spiciest kimchi.
- What is your favorite food and why? I believe wholeheartedly in the adage “Life is too short. Eat dessert first.†No matter where I go and how much eat, there is always room for dessert – especially tiramisu!
- What is an interesting hobby of yours? I’m an avid reader and particularly enjoy reading in odd places. From camping out behind a radiator in Barnes and Nobles to sitting in trees, I can lose myself in a good book for hours.
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? I would split the amount between children’s hunger charities and the Equal Opportunity Fund at state colleges across New Jersey. As an EOF alumna, I’ve seen first-hand what funding and guidance can do for underprivileged youths. It’s the difference between wasted potential and real opportunity.
Sheena Ruffin, New York City Correspondent

Sheena is a woman with many passions. Healthy fare, community activism and social entrepreneurship happen to be some of them. In addition to working for a thriving NYC start-up, Sheena also serves as the Director of Operations for a social enterprise venture aimed at changing the microfinance landscape. Sheena has a B.A. in Psychology and Philosophy from Brown University. A native of Brooklyn, NY, Sheena is active in her community and pursues her wanderlust tendencies with jaunts all over the world. When she’s not involved with all things Appetite for Good, Sheena enjoys her duties as the resident NYC know-it all to her lost but lovable friends.
- What is your favorite food and why? Coming from a Southern family and raised in NYC, it’s nearly impossible to pick just one. With fried chicken, macaroni and cheese and candied yams all being weekly staples at the Ruffin residence, I’m sure you feel my pain. But if forced, I must give in to my sweet tooth and tout the magical properties of Banana Pudding. Aside from my aunt Agnes who resides in the south, you CANNOT beat Magnolia’s version. I will literally throw down for just a taste!
- What is an interesting hobby of yours? I’m not sure about interesting, but I am a magazine connoisseur. At my height, I was receiving upward of 20+ per month but have since cut back to about 10 / month. Every time I visit a new country, I make sure to get their version of Vogue for my future magazine dedicated room in my future massive abode.
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? Hands down, I’d start an extensive healthy food initiative in lower income neighborhoods in Brooklyn, bringing a myriad of options within their grasp. Knowing firsthand the lack of nutritious options in disadvantaged communities, this is a cause I feel strongly about and a wrong that must be righted in order to ensure our children are making the most of their lives.
Jacquie Viskovich, New York City Correspondent

Jacquie is a journalist turned marketer/researcher at Updata Advisors. She received a BA in Communications from Villanova University, which means she is hugely disappointed Villanova basketball fan this year. She is a born and raised New Yorker, growing up on the south shore of Long Island and spending the past four years living in both Brooklyn and Manhattan. Jacquie has contributed her time to annual Special Olympics events, participates in numerous cancer run/walk benefits, and sponsors underprivledged youths globally, allowing them to receive the education and opporunities they need to lead the lives they deserve.
- What is your favorite food and why? I love all food except deli meat and condiments. My hands down favorite would probably have to be my mother’s stuffed shells because its a delicious mixture of meat, cheese and pasta (my three good groups).
- What is an interesting hobby of yours? I dabble in playing the guitar and painting, but I’m a wiz kid when it comes to Nintendo games (as an only child, I had alot of free time for video games).
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? I would definitely donate it all to funding cancer research. There are far too many people in my life affected by cancer and the faster we can find some kind of cure the better.
Texas
Lauren Everitt, Austin & San Antonio Correspondent

Lauren is a history major with a penchant for WWII documentaries, Sex and the City re-runs and Stephen Colbert. After completing her undergraduate studies at Trinity University and the University of Essex, Lauren took a trajectory from Latin to Linux and hopped on board with Rackspace Hosting as an account manager in San Antonio, Texas. Continuing to dapple in freelance writing on the side, Lauren decided to pursue her twin passions for writing and travel to Cape Town, South Africa on a five month hiatus. As a volunteer journalist for The Big Issue, a nonprofit magazine that provides jobs and skills training for marginalized adults, Lauren discovered her true passion for service through reporting. She currently resides in Austin, Texas, where she enjoys discovering the local joints that “keep Austin weird†and prepping for journalism graduate school this fall.
- What is your favorite food and why? Chocolate, Melted, coated, truffled, drizzled, baked, or dolloped, the Aztecs were definitely onto something when they discovered this nectar of the gods. Chocolate skittles are blasphemy and tootsie rolls are a waste of jaw exertion, but a true truffle is pure bliss (a shout out to the magical wizards of chocolate production at Cadbury). If forced to choose just one decadent morsel, I’d have go with a quality chocolate souffle. You know what I’m talking about, the kind that explodes chocolate lava with the gentlest nudge of the fork. Paired with wine after dinner is my favorite form of indulgence, but I’m not discriminate and a little cocoa for breakfast never hurt; antioxidants anyone?
- What is an interesting hobby of yours? I’m an avid runner and six days a week I can be found cruising around the streets of Austin in my favorite New Balance sneakers. Hey, I have to do something to counteract the chocolate consumption.
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? I would donate the money to Journalists for Human Rights. This Canada-based organization provides training and resources for grassroots journalism movements in post-conflict African countries. They do a fantastic job of empowering locals to cover issues relevant to their respective communities and creating those citizen watchdog we take for granted in democracies.
Celia Moshier, Houston Correspondent

A Michigan native, Celia became interested in community work during high school when she volunteered at a nursing home; chatting with elderly women and giving them manicures. She continued working with the elderly through college and occasionally volunteers at the Houston Food Bank since her move to Texas in 2008. Celia received her bachelor’s in Advertising with a specialization in PR, and engages in all things Marketing while she cracks the project whip at Digital Canvas. More often than not, you’ll find her glued to a computer reading and writing for marketing blogs, solving technical problems or tweaking her latest website creation. When she’s not managing work related items, Celia enjoys cheering on the MSU Spartans with her fellow alumni and just about anything involving the outdoors and friends. Though she misses her family and the Great Lakes, she loves exploring the cultural diversity Houston has to offer.
- What is your favorite food and why? I don’t like to limit my choices when it comes to food, but if I had to narrow it down I’d say chocolate and cheese. If I’m eating chocolate, I must have cheese and vice versa; the sweet and salty mix is euphoric! Try a bite of semi-sweet chocolate followed by a bite of medium cheddar and I promise you won’t be disappointed.
- What is an interesting hobby of yours? Nerding up the joint. I could go on for days about search engine optimization, content management systems, and marketing strategies.
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? Create Michigan State University scholarships for out of state applicants thus, enabling more students nation, even world wide, to receive top-notch education while enjoying the unparalleled atmosphere of the great Spartan community.
Monica Yoo, Houston Correspondent

Unlike most marketing professionals, Monica carries a streak of techno geekiness. She gets her kicks from new iPhone apps and spends countless hours catching up on her RSS feeds. She has advised several Houston individuals and companies on how to plan and leverage new media to effectively build relationships and communities online. There is nothing more exciting and rewarding than when she finds new and unique applications of technology in industries other than her own. Her interest for charitable organizations sprouted from her experience in high school and college tutoring underprivileged students. It was then she discovered the untapped potential of today’s youth.
- What is your favorite food and why? I love it all! I’m a curious eater that likes to try different foods, but if I had to pick one thing I couldn’t live without, it would definitely be chips and salsa.
- What is an interesting hobby of yours? Currently, it’s experimenting how to take wicked cool pictures with my DSLR camera. I’m still learning how to use it, so photography tips are welcome!
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? I’d use it to support organizations that encourage youths to explore entrepreneurism in an environment that fosters creativity. I believe that a solid academic education is important, but I also think children need an outlet to be able to explore, experiment and challenge themselves in unconventional ways. With all their energy, spunk and potential, today’s youth can positively impact our society.
Joy Zhang, Dallas Correspondent

Upon graduation, Joy took a complete 180 and pursued her passion in food and photography. Currently she is a pastry chef and freelance food photographer and writer. As a native to Shanghai, China, Joy is passionate about her culture and is heavily influenced by Chinese traditions taught by her mom. She strongly believes in giving back to her community by teaching people the importance of eating good quality food and sustaining a healthy lifestyle. She currently lives with her husband in Dallas, TX along with their lab and cat, Layla and Lily. In her spare time she enjoys Yoga, playing piano and traveling.
- What is your favorite food and why? My favorite food would have to be Chinese. I promise I am not being biased!!! I love the variety of flavors from all different regions of China — Szechuan province is known for their hot chili peppers, Shanghai is known for their soup dumplings and decadent ribs, Beijing is known for their famous roast duck of course, I mean I could go on forever, but I’ll stop here. I could eat Chinese food forever
- What is an interesting hobby of yours? I like to dance and sing, by no means am I good at either but anytime I am feeling happy or goofy I will break out in a random dance or song. My husband especially gets embarrassed when I feel the need to do so when we’re grocery shopping, I think he’s a pretty lucky guy.
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? I would use the money to further children’s education. Many families out there are unable to afford educational resources and the cost of college has always been problematic. I would want to establish education funds and scholarships for low income families, I’ve always believed that an educated mind leads to a successful future.
California
Lindsay Jones, Los Angeles Correspondent

Lindsay Jones is a lifelong foodie who has been exploring, devouring and relishing the ever changing gastro-scene in Los Angeles since 2003. Pre LA, she spent four years at Arizona State University, getting a degree in Broadcast Journalism and figuring out how to dine at every great restaurant in Scottsdale for under $20.00. Since graduating, Lindsay has been pursuing her dream of turning a penchant for flirting with all things food into a flourishing career. Currently, she works in interactive marketing at POM Wonderful, authors two blogs (FoodFlirt90210 and KarmalizedLife) and takes every opportunity to inspire people to be kind, eat well, cook with abandon and live their best life.
- What is your favorite food and why? I tend to have a favorite food of the week that changes with the seasons and with my cravings, but if I had to choose one at this moment, it’s a homemade pizza with Arrabiata sauce, Burrata cheese, mushrooms, red onion, eggplant and fennel sausage. Growing up in Lake Tahoe, my parents loved having personal pizza making parties in the winter when it was snowing like crazy. I love how creative you can get when making pizza and how glorious bubbling cheese and warm dough smells in the oven. Yummy.
- What is an interesting hobby of yours? I make paintings that are half painting, half collage and I collect sea shells, small boxes, and wine corks.
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? I would split the dollars giving half to Possible Dream International, a non profit organization co-founded by my favorite blogger Dr. Maithri Goonetilleke of The Soaring Impulse. The organization is designed to empower communities in areas of deep and immediate need throughout the world with a strong focus on Swaziland. I would use the remaining half to start an organization that would gather and distribute excess food restaurants, hotels, etc. to hungry families, soup kitchens, and the like.
Lydia Yun, Los Angeles Correspondent

Lydia is a recent graduate of UCLA School of Law. Far from a native Californian, she was originally born in a small town in Germany and grew up in another small town in Ohio. Having majored in art history in college, she loves traveling and sees herself living abroad again at some point in the future. But for the time being, she will do her best to enjoy L.A.’s never-ending sun and bring readers closer to the city’s incredibly varied food culture. With an interest in sustainable food systems, one might find her at one of the many farmer’s markets in the area, doing her part by supporting local farmers.
- What is your favorite food and why? Really good artisanal bread. The kind that’s dark and crusty but really chewy on the inside. Slathered with anything from butter, jam, nutella, or cheese… But the best meals I’ve ever had were always at home – my mom’s Korean cooking has absolutely no competition!
- What is an interesting hobby of yours? Perhaps not so interesting because everyone seems to do it these days, but I practice yoga as often as I can.
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? I would donate to general aid organizations that aim to fight worldwide hunger crises, particularly in light of the present circumstances in Haiti where even prior to the earthquake, hunger was already a serious issue.
Sandy Todd Webster, San Diego Correspondent

Sandy Todd Webster is Editor in Chief for the award-winning health and fitness trade publication IDEA Fitness Journal. She directs 6 publications at IDEA, and recently launched IDEA Food & Nutrition Tips to better serve the demand for fitness professionals’ continuing education in this space. She is an accomplished home cook and, although she loves her job as a career magazine professional, she would prefer to meander farmers’ markets in search of inspiring ingredients and turn the dirt in her own garden. Cooking for family and friends, and sharing good champagne and wine are among her chief joys in life.
As someone who loves to eat pretty much anything and everything, Sandy has learned in 11 years at the forefront of the fitness industry that energy balance is essential. Calories in have to go somewhere! This means you can find her cross training most days for triathlons, strength training or just enjoying a good “playout,” because working out should be fun and not drudgery.
- What is your favorite food and why? The simpler and more straightforward, the better—and with a side of steamed broccoli. I think my last meal request would be a medium-cooked, high quality, well-seasoned hamburger with a perfectly ripened avocado (make that two) smooshed all over it. Simple. Tasty. Scrumptious and juicy. Also, I would eat anything Mario Batali put in front of me!
- What is an interesting hobby of yours? Training for endurance events. Next in the queue? Ironman Arizona in November 2012. “I find triathletes to be fun, crazy people who by and large follow though on what they say they will do in all facets of their lives. There is no ‘try’ with triathletes—only ‘do’.”
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? I would give it to an organization that teaches kids and families how to cook and how to garden. Both are lost arts. Both do wonders for bringing families together for quality time that is so sorely lacking in our world today. I truly believe that if you teach kids food “survival skills” and appreciation for whole, fresh ingredients, that the horrible cycle of obesity can be broken.

- What is an interesting hobby of yours? I like to exercise with my Wii!
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? I would donate it to a college friend of mine who is planning to start an organization to improve public education opportunities in East Africa.

Christina Whiteus, Chicago Correspondent

Christina has lived all over, but nowhere long enough to consider home. She drifted from Ohio and Connecticut to Germany and Austria and back until settling in Boston where she earned her BA at Wellesley College. She is now enjoying an extended stay in the great city of Chicago courtesy of Northwestern University’s doctoral program in Neuroscience. When she’s not mincing mouse brains or puzzling out the mysteries of the mind, she takes advantage of the city’s impressive cultural and culinary offerings, from excellent opera and fine dining to karaoke and innovative hot dog joints. She is also an avid reader, an inconstant runner, and an aspiring hispanohablante.
- What is your favorite food and why? Right now my favorite food is mussels. It takes so long to get to the meat that it makes you to enjoy the bite you’re having before you take the next. I love the way simple ingredients, a little cream, herbs, and onions, can be transformed into such a mouthwatering sauce and how you can use the leftover as an excuse to binge on good bread.
- What is an interesting hobby of yours? I’m probably one of fifty people who enjoy the sound of the banjo and I’m taking lessons to torture to remaining forty-nine of you.
- What would you do with $1 million in charity money? I’m worried about the health of our environment and the diversity of wildlife so I would donate the money to The Conservation Fund.
